Introduction to Percentages

Name: _________________________ Date: _________________________

We use percentages so we can easily compare different measurements.
eg: Mary has 4 out of 10 cards and Carl has 8 out of 20 stickers. They both have 40%.
How? Because we multiplied both numbers by whatever was needed to make the bottom number 100:

Mary:
410 × 1010 = 40100 = 40%
Carl:
820 × 55 = 40100 = 40%
Section 1: Hundred grids
Section 2: 10s can still show percents
Sometimes a whole is split into only 10 equal parts. Think of an egg carton that holds only 10 eggs.
If 6 out of 10 spaces have eggs, the container is 60 out of 100 full, or 60% full.
Section 3: Write the percentage as a fraction
Write each percent as a fraction. Some will be out of 100. Some can be written as smaller fractions too.
